In Times Like These We Need A Friend

The recent earthquake and tsunami which devastated parts of Japan and affected many nations and islands in and around the Pacific has now led to the threat of a possible nuclear meltdown at one of the nuclear power plants in Japan. Should such an event occur, it would further devastate an already wounded nation, and have far-reaching international impacts as well.

These all serve to remind us that we as human beings are all ultimately interconnected as we share this planet.

While there are those who are saying that these events are signs that the “end times” are near, many others are coming to the aid of the victims of these tragic events.

History has shown time and again that while we as humans can be our own worst enemies in times of war and strife, when disasters of an international level strike, we as human beings can also be our own best friends…

IN TIMES LIKE THESE WE NEED A FRIEND

In times like these we need a friend
who’s faithful to the end,
In times like these we need a friend
on whom we can depend.
In the shadow of the valley
or the light of a new day
A friend to share the laughter
and the tears along the way.

In a world that’s filled with terror
and a world that’s filled with fear,
It’s easy to believe
that the end times must be near.
But when the storm clouds start to gather
and the thunder rumbles near,
We look to something bigger than
the thing it is we fear.
Oh-
We look to something bigger than
the thing it is we fear.

Through the good times and the bad times
since humanity began,
We’ve always searched for something
that’s a common need of man.
It’s been spoken through the ages
and I’ll say it once again,
In times like these we need a friend
who’s faithful to the end.
Oh-
In times like these we need a friend
who’s faithful to the end.

NOTES: The “poem” above is actually the lyrics to a song which I wrote a few years ago, but never published.

This seemed to be an appropriate time to share them with all of you…
